TRAVEL EATS (Pt 1) : Lexington KY

As most of you already know, I’ve been living in Lex for a few years now going to school. I’m not even going to lie, yes, I did my research before I decided to transfer to UK. And I don’t just mean the degree programs and academic opportunities…I mean the foodie scene. My standards were as follows: at least one trader joe’s and whole foods and 5-10 acceptable restaurants. (You can laugh @ me, I know I am ridiculous) Lucky for me, I found both of these qualifications to be satisfied! If you’ve read further into my blog, you can see I am no stranger to trader joe’s or whole foods and will continue to sing their praises (PRAISE)

One of the greatest things about Lex, other than UK basketball, bourbon, and horses is that they are continuously updating and expanding their downtown scene! They have recently opened many new restaurants, bars, and shops. While I do love trying new things, I will admit I do have my favorites that are put in rotation ;)

There are WAY MORE than this ( seeing as it is a part 1 ) but here are just a few:

Doodles(262 N Limestone):  (NO, I didn’t eat the biscuit. Wish I could though) Hands down best breakfast in the lexington area. Best thing about doodles is their use of fresh and local ingredients that make you feel good about what you are putting in your body. It’s basic of me, but I get the same thing every time. Omelet w/ onions, peppers, cheese, bacon, mushrooms and spinach. Breakfast done right!

Ted’s Montana Grill(2304 Sir Barton Way): Yes, I am aware we have these in Chicago too and they are probably located all over the country. But, YUM! I never really went to this place when I lived at home but decided to try it out because hey, it’s close to my work. One downside: they don’t have gluten free buns but the burger is SO flavorful, you don’t even notice. Plus their fries are BOMB. ^^ Avalon burger: melted gruyère with a hint of bleu cheese, crumbled bacon and sweet caramelized onions, roasted garlic aioli and baby arugula

Bru Burger Bar(3010 Lakecrest Cir): I know, I know, another burger place! I can’t even believe I don’t have a picture of the food from this place because I’ve been here at least 2387238 times. But oh my, this place is damn good. I’d say definitely top five fries I’ve ever had (side note: I AM A FRY SNOB) the burger I get is called the Provencal: basil aioli, red onion jam, herbed goat cheese, and sautéed mushrooms ALL on a #glutenfree bun… If that doesn’t sounds good, I don’t know what will?!

BLAZE(341 S Limestone): new place in lex, but pretty sure they are @ different locations! VERY VERY thin crust, If you’re from Chicago, you’ve been warned! AND the gluten free pizza is even thinner!! Still good though, many specialty pies and you can even make your own. Basically the chipotle of pizza. ^^ “Link In” pie: italian sausage, roasted red peppers, sautéed onions, mozzarella, and marinara sauce.

Gumbo YaYa(1080 S Broadway): probably my absolute favorite place here in lex AND the one I most frequent! Such a great financial steal, $7 for two portions and some bread (or chips) definitely enough food to leave you with some leftovers. Wish I had a more flattering picture, but unfortunately, cajun food isn’t the most aesthetically pleasing. You’ll just have to take my word for it and check it out! ^^ half jambalaya/half white chili w/ chips and spicy garlic gumbo sauce

Wild Eggs(3735 Palomar Center Dr): second best breakfast place–and I’ve got to commend them on their menu because it is quite extensive! AND offers the biggest gluten free selection including pancakes, waffles and french toast! I typically get the farmers market skillet: Bell pepper, onion, zucchini, yellow squash, wild mushrooms, skillet potatoes, broccoli, oven-roasted tomato, melted cheddar jack cheese, two basted eggs ^^ Toasted Marshmallow Coffee

Pies&Pints(401 W Main Street): UGHHHH, it has been too long since I’ve been here! Located downtown, it’s a nice distance for a scenic walk (and to work off that pizza) A little on the pricey side, especially if you need the #gf crust, but insanely worth it. Really creative combinations that are equally tasty. However, the cuban pork takes the cake for me. ^^ Cuban Pork: pulled pork, caramelized onions, pineapple, jalapeños, cilantro, feta, and creme fraiche.

*** ALL the above have gluten free menu/options—To find more pictures, follow me on my foodie instagram, @kabkitchen

Enjoy and look out for PART TWO :)
